Q and A with our new manager Alexis...
Family situation/military affiliation? I have been married for 22 years this year and have three kids: ages 19, 16 and 14. My husband is retired Navy, 23 years of service, and now works in the private sector. I grew up locally in Alexandria in the Fort Hunt area, spent 11 years elsewhere and moved back in 2000.
Hobbies outside? My family, and by family of course I mean my dog Emi as well! Although I am an only child, I am so happy to have married into a big family and have made lifelong friends along the way, several dating back to elementary school. I love functional fitness such as Pilates and walking. When I want to relax, it’s puzzle time and the beach is my happy place. We were fortunate enough to have two overseas tours, in Japan and Spain. Travel is a family must, we have been so lucky to experience many countries as a family.
Favorite place visited or traveled? This isn’t a one word answer, most of my answers aren’t one word as those who know me will attest to! For food, that’s easy, Italy. Best trip ever, Tanzania, Africa, with my family in 2023. A country I can’t wait to visit again, Portugal. One I want to go to next, Greece. When I need to escape, the place my mind always takes me, the beach.
Favorite go-to for comfort food? Pizza and more pizza, with a great wine to accompany.
Favorite things bought at FMTS? That’s a hard one because I have so many favorites! I’ve been a thrifter since high school, went to a downtown college in VA (VCU) and have always been an avid lover of all things vintage as well as all types of music, art and fashion.
What drew me in to the FMTS? Our mission, the love of all things treasured finding a new home and keeping things out of landfills. I also truly believe that one person's trash is another’s treasure.
What keeps me here? Our mission, our volunteers and our customers. Honestly not a day goes by that I don’t love coming into the FMTS. Each day is an adventure.
What am I most looking forward to in my new role? Growing the contribution to our mission, building more community partnerships and getting to know our volunteers and customers better.
One word to describe the FMTS? Joy! We try to provide a happy place for our customers and volunteers, we work hard to raise money for our mission to the community.
Advice to someone visiting the FMTS for the first time? Pick a day where you have plenty of time to browse and explore. We have two buildings with so many items and volunteers with stories to tell. The journey is the cake and the treasures are the icing.
My future vision? A space that is more welcoming, organized and inviting that will inspire our volunteers and customers to continue to support our mission and the military community it supports.

The Fort Myer Thrift Shop
located on Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, Virginia
The Fort Myer Thrift Shop has a small staff and many volunteers who help keep our thrift store organized and running.

In 2026, the Fort Myer Thrift Shop awarded $200,000 in community grants and scholarships. These funds are generated from sales of donated and consigned items at the thrift shop as well as monetary donations. This year, the thrift shop contributed funds to 30 military and nonprofit organizations that support military members, veterans, and their families in the Greater Washington Area. The FMTS also awarded 33 scholarships to Army dependents of the Greater Washington Area. The Fort Myer Thrift Shop is primarily a volunteer organization, with a small staff, housed on Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall (JBMHH).

Fort Myer Thrift Shop is a multi-purpose organization that serves the community as a resale outlet of used items for a low price. We accept donations from anyone/organizations and/or consignments from military families. We serve as a forum for friendships and an outreach within the community for all - customers - consignors - volunteers and staff. As a 501 c (3) IRS approved organization, tax receipts may be given for donations.
