Fort Myer Thrift Shop- Operations & Shop Manager


The Fort Myer Thrift Shop (FMTS), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization located on Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, is seeking an Operations & Shop Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations and long term success of the organization.

FMTS supports military families in the National Capital Region through scholarships and grants funded through shop proceeds.

FMTS operates a unique two-building thrift and consignment operation supported by a small paid staff and a large volunteer community.


Position overview
This position is responsible for the operational leadership, financial stewardship, staff and volunteer coordination, and overall management of the Fort Myer Thrift Shop.

The Manager serves as the primary operational lead for the organization and works closely with the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, military community partners, vendors, and service providers.

This position requires strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to manage multiple operational priorities in a dynamic nonprofit retail environment.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Oversee daily operations of the thrift shop and boutique workforce
• Supervise paid staff and support volunteer workforce
• Identify and implement improvements related to workflow, space utilization, and operational efficiency
• Maintain and improve operational policies, procedures, and internal controls
• Develop and implement operational processes and organizational standards
• Identify opportunities for workflow, systems, and process improvements
• Support financial oversight processes in coordination with bookkeeping/accounting providers and the Board
• Oversee POS systems, operational technology platforms, and vendor relationships
• Coordinate facilities, maintenance, and base-related operational requirements
• Support volunteer onboarding, communication, scheduling and accountability processes
• Prepare operational updates and reports to the Board
• Ensure compliance with applicable nonprofit and installation requirements
• Support special projects, seasonal transitions, and operational improvements
• Promote a professional, respectful, and mission-focused working environment for staff and volunteers

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
• Current military or dependent ID card
• Strong organizational and communication skills
• Ability to manage multiple operational priorities independently
• Supervisory and leadership experience
• Comfort working with technology platforms and operational systems
• Ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, vendors, and Board members
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in retail, nonprofit, operations, or volunteer management
• Experience supervising staff and/or volunteers
• Experience with POS systems, inventory, or financial coordination
• Experience developing operational procedures or process improvements
• Familiarity with nonprofit organizations or military community programs

Schedule
The shop is currently open Tuesday through Thursday and one Saturday per month (two in November and December). This position requires flexibility to address operational, volunteer, vendor, and organizational needs outside normal business hours as necessary.

Compensation is based on experience and qualifications

CONSIGNMENT HIGHLIGHTS...​
  • Consignment by appointment - only for valid military ID card holders.  
  • Call (703) 527-0664 for an appointment ​- only ONE appointment per week!
  • Have all paperwork ready (including pricing) prior to appointment
  • Furniture must be pre-approved (of good quality and reasonably sized)
  • Saturday consigning from 10am-12pm (with appointment)

  • Summer Clothing:      May 5 - June 25, 2026​
  • 4th of July/Americana:     May 19 - June 11, 2026

​WEATHER POLICY
We follow Arlington County Public Schools.
If Arlington Public Schools are closed due to bad weather, we are closed.
If they are delayed in opening, we are delayed in opening to 11:00am.

Shopping Bags
We always are in need of donations of shopping bags with handles!

You may bring your own bags for checkout, but please use our shopping basket for shopping.

Strollers
For the safety of everyone, we do not allow strollers in the Boutique.
Scholarships and Community Grants Offered
The Fort Myer Thrift Shop is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization. We offer senior high school student, college student, and military spouse scholarships every year and community grants. Please click on the links for eligibility and further information.

​The Fort Myer Thrift Shop accepts cash, checks (prior approval in office required) and credit cards ($7 minimum). 

​​ALL military spouses from ALL services and ALL ranks
​are invited to join our team of
